A way of reading luxury hotel ratings past the star count, using two words: Confidence (Forbes) and Character (Michelin).
Confidence — Forbes
A strong Forbes rating tells a guest the hotel is reliably excellent: the service will be exceptional, consistent across every department, and problems will be handled.
Character — Michelin
A strong Michelin Keys rating tells a guest the hotel is distinctive and memorable: it has identity, design that matters and a genuine sense of place.
Both — the rare best
A property strong on both is flawlessly run and genuinely special. These are rare, because confidence and character are built differently — one through systems and training, the other through vision and place.

Star counts and Key counts are easy to compare and easy to misread. A traveller sees a five and a three and tries to rank them, when the two numbers are answering different questions. The Beyond The Stars Framework is a way to look past the count to what each rating actually promises.
The framework turns an unanswerable question, “which rating is better”, into an answerable one: “which do I want more on this trip, confidence or character”. Confidence should lead on a business trip where the day cannot be derailed, a milestone celebration where flawless service is the point, or travel where reliability matters more than atmosphere. Character should lead on a honeymoon or special escape, a trip built around a place and its culture, or for a traveller who wants somewhere that could only exist where it stands.
The rare hotel that is both is the one worth the journey: Forbes tells a guest a hotel is good, Michelin tells a guest it is special, and the property that earns both is reliably run and genuinely distinctive at once.
